Twenty Questions with Scott Patrick

1. How did you get started in wedding photography? I have always been interested in the art of photography, in 1983 I had the opportunity to photograph my first wedding and fell in love with the fun and creativity wedding photography offers.

2. What is your photographic philosophy? As a wedding photojournalist my aim is to document an event, not direct it. I want to artistically and unobtrusively capture the spirit of a couple's wedding naturally, as it happens.

3. Do you offer black and white photography? Yes, it's a specialty of mine; I love the aesthetic beauty of black and white photography.

4. Who has been your inspiration? I have been inspired by many of today's finest wedding photographers as well as great street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans.

5. You have a reputation for being very discreet, how do you do that? As I said, I simply observe and document a couple's sacred day; I do not feel the need to be the center of attention or to pose every photograph.

6. What has been the most difficult wedding you've ever photographed? My brother's; it was very emotional for me.

7. Your favorite? Any outdoor wedding.

8. What is the one image you always get? The expression of a groom the first time he sees his bride.

9. What kind of equipment do you use? I use high quality, professional equipment that fits me, my style and the end product I am trying to create. For me its about the image not the equipment.

10. How many photos do you take at a wedding? What ever it takes, I set no photo limits. For most full-day events, however, I capture over 1,000 images and then create an Edited Selection of between 600 and 800 images.

11. Do you offer packages? Yes, I offer a variety of different packages. I think packages offer the best value for the dollar because packages give couples my services and an album at price they can understand and budget for.

12. What is your proofing policy? I offer "proofs" in the form of my Image Catalog, which the couple gets to keep. I also post the couple's images on a secure web site.

13. Do you work alone or with an assistant? It all depends on the event. I am very comfortable documenting smaller events on my own, but if the event requires or couple requests I may work with an assistant or a second Associate Photographer.

14. When should a couple book your services? I work on a first-come, first-served basis. Some couples book me as early as a year in advance.

15. What should couples spend on their wedding photography? That all depends. How important is photography and the preservation of a couple's wedding memories to them? I offer a unique style and approach to wedding photography along with the highest quality photographs and albums. My Signature Coverage packages begin around $3,000 and reach over $10,000 depending on the size, type and number of albums and photographs ordered.

16. What are your payment policies? I ask for a retainer of one third the package amount to confirm my services. A second third payment is due a month before the event with the balance due upon receipt of the couple's Image Catalog.

17. How do you feel about portraits? Creating a set of portraits for family historical purposes is an important part of any wedding. I generally create a collection of about ten portraits and prefer to only take a few minutes of a couple's precious time instead of a few hours.

18. Do you use standard wedding photography checklists or do table shots? No.

19. What's your most embarrassing wedding moment? Admitting that I once did create the double exposure shots of large looming wedding couple heads floating over the ceremony.

20. What's your favorite part of your job? Documenting the special day of a couple in love and getting their comments afterwards when they first see their photographs.
